Maria Korporal
Biography
I was born 1962 in Sliedrecht, the Netherlands. I studied graphics, painting photography and film at the St. Joost Academy of Fine Arts in Breda, graduating with (among other things) a video installation. After my studies, in 1986, I moved to Italy. In 1989 I founded with Gerrit Van Oord the Italian publishing house Apeiron Editori, directing the production and book design. In this environment I became involved with the use of computers, and I began applying digital techniques also in my art work. Since 1998 I have dedicated myself to using mainly the new media arts for my expression.
Until 2013 I lived in Italy in Sant’Oreste (RM). Since 2014 I have lived and worked as a freelance artist and web designer in Berlin.
My artistic production includes video art, interactive projects, installations. My multimedia work has been designed using a wide variety of techniques. The narrative aspect, both personal and social, plays a major role in my work and, together with the directness of the images and the sounds, leads to a great participation of the viewer. My interactive installations in particular invite the viewer to participate. In my work I play with virtuality and reality, with undergone and artificially generated experiences. Most of my projects deal with social and environmental issues.
I experienced the world as very turbulent in the last years 2020-2022, and this had a direct impact on my work as an artist. After many years of focusing almost exclusively on digital forms of expression, I started working with analogue charcoal drawings again during the lockdown, in the form of animation sequences. Thus, in the intimate atmosphere of my studio, many charcoal and pastel animations were created. Spontaneous ideas and associations that have been processed in my most recent video works, such as “Pervitin Power” (2021) and “Wandel” (2022), in combination with film footage and digital media on specific themes.
The threat of climate change has been on my mind for some time, but the war in Ukraine and the resulting crisis in the Western world, have changed my thinking more radically in relation to digital development and our dependence on technology. The core question of my multidisciplinary project “Qorporal Qodes” (2022) is: how would we interpret digital signs if we were locked in a bunker without electricity and internet? In this work, I try to find solutions to this problem in an interplay of analogue and digital – from flipbooks to virtual reality video.
