Biography

FARIBA KARIMI, born in Tabriz, Iran

I live and work in Rome. I was born on 11 November 1981 in Tabriz, Iran, in the north, the still Iranian part of Azerbaijan, where Azerbaijani is spoken. Persian is the official language studied at school and when we moved to Tehran I was only five years old. In addition to the novelty of being in a huge city I also had the problem of having to learn Farsi, a language of which I had only a few words. I was a lonely and shy child. For the first seven years of my life, I lived through the war between Iran and Iraq. I well remember the fear, the radio on 24 hours a day, the air-raid warnings for the bombings, the terror of the chemical weapons supplied to Iraq by the industries of some European countries. Distant voices, but they are still alive and always present: a sound or an image is enough to evoke them.

After finishing art school, I graduated in 2006 in Painting from the University of Art in Tehran. In 2009, I came to Rome to study architecture at Valle Giulia, but I was immediately disappointed. The following year I enrolled at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma, from where I graduated in “painting” in 2014. Little by little, I found my own way. I chose another life, different and “adventurous,” alone in Italy, earning a living by painting large canvases and small abstract drawings. I am not one for half measures … in Rome I had the opportunity to develop my research and passion for engraving and knowledge of traditional western and eastern papers, and I began to use them as a medium that is very present in my work.

On my journey and in my meetings in Rome, I met the artist Marilù Eustachio by chance when I lived in Trastevere, and immediately we became great friends. She is a special person and a great artist and intellectual who opened up the world to me. Since she started painting, Marilù has also carried on a large parallel project that consists of hundreds of notebooks with drawings and notes, the record of a lifetime, where quality also lies in quantity, and where constancy and determination become “style.” She has always preferred a secluded life, prioritizing her work. A few years ago, I started to organize the archive for her, and this work has brought me yet further riches and knowledge about Italian contemporary art and literature, in particular about Roman art and female artists of the last hundred years.

In recent years, in addition to large canvases, I have been working on various series of paintings and drawings, mostly small in size … using mixed techniques on paper. Most are in black and white with some shade of grey, but every now and then I use colours … a red, a bright blue, almost cobalt, and an intense blue.
