Silvia Stucky
Biography
My works have been screened in video festivals and exhibited in galleries and museums in Italy, Argentina, Chile, Ecuador, Egypt, France, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Indonesia, India, Iran, Morocco, The Netherlands, Switzerland, Thailand, Turkey, United States.
My practice includes painting, artist’s books, photography, video, installation and performance. The main elements of the work are nature, water as stillness and mutability, the profundity of ‘simple’ things.
Art for me is a way of provoking thought, asking questions, expecting for the unexpected, being amazed by every cloud that passes, every leaf that falls, every reflection in the water of a puddle; seeing every phenomenon not as separate but connected to the whole.
Reflecting on the things that surround us, beyond our closest horizon.
Everything is interconnected in nature; everything is in a dynamic equilibrium, in an endless transformation. I try to enter this interconnected network, to welcome and preserve the splendour of nature.
In order to do this, I took a step back, relinquishing – as it were – my authorship, to allow an empty space and a fruitful time for things to just happen.
Too much planning may prove unnecessary; it is better to follow things ‘like flowing water’, to find the harmony and balance of nature, in us and also outside of us, in social life, to remind ourselves that a world without balance is a world without justice.
The knowledge and study of the thought of other cultures – primarily those of the Far East – have helped me a lot to understand things from other points of view. I have always seen diversity as enrichment.
Francesca Gallo wrote about my work: “From paper to installation, from performance to video, Silvia Stucky’s practice is made up of minimal interventions in which authorship is reduced in order to reproducing oriental decorations, arranging a herbarium, capturing natural phenomena or unstudied human behaviour, enhancing an involuntary beauty, in the light of respect for the other in all its forms”.
