Biography

My first experience of art was at home, in the Sixties, when I was a child, and I used to watch my mother painting small oil pictures in the kitchen during her free time. There, for the first time, I learned to recognize and to use the painter’s tools, and there, for the first time, I savoured the joy of ’creating’ a painting.

During the years that followed and after starting to learn the piano, my relationship with art turned more towards music. Whilst attending a linguistic high school I also prepared piano exams at the Cherubini Conservatory in Florence; I rarely painted in those years.

When I was twenty I moved to Germany. Here, I attended the University of Mainz, working at the same time in order to earn a living, and in 1992 I achieved a Doctorate in Philology and Musicology. For about twenty years the main activities of my life continued to be philological and musicological research, as well as playing in a piano duet. I only used to paint during my holidays in Italy.

Towards the end of the Nineties, after my two children were born, I left my work at the University and gradually began to paint again, above all oil portraits.

 It was a succession of sad events – among which my father’s death – that made me reflect on my life and led me to decide that, from then on, painting should be an essential part of As a result, I began to visit art exhibitions and art fairs as well as artists‘ studios, discovering new techniques and materials. I too started to experiment with several styles of painting until, in 2002, I was able to exhibit my works in my first one-woman show at Palazzo Datini in Prato.

From then on I began showing my works in a variety of solo and group exhibitions. I met new people and established new relationships in artistic circles which provided me with new ideas and stimuli.

It was as if I had suddenly realized that painting could be the only real way to share my ideas and experiences, and though music still accompanied my activity for some time (until

2007 I often played the piano at the opening of my exhibitions), I finally decided to focus on visual art.

This decision marked a turning point in my life and brought about major changes. In 2007, following my divorce, I returned to Italy, where I still live and where I have continued painting and exhibiting while also doing several different jobs to earn a living. The recollections, the experiences, the contradictions of all these years provided the inspiration to create my artworks, taking on physical form as many images, shapes and colours on canvas.

Irony, chromatic and formal antithesis, strict geometry, the combination of apparentely shattered elements have become a means of expressing and giving answers to life’s questions. Painting was – and remains – my way of dealing with reality and of reflecting upon human existence.

One of my recent solo exhibitions was entitled “ Inner Paths“. This accurately describes what my works are: a painted tale of my personal voyage through this world and through this life.

Curriculum

 Beatrice Donin was born in Prato in 1960 and studied in Prato and Florence. In 1980 she moved to Germany, where she gained her PhD in philology and musicology at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz.

From 1984 to 1992 she was a concert pianist, specializing in piano duets.

From 1992 to 1996 she worked as a researcher at the Institute of Musicology of the

University of Mainz.

In 2007 she returned to Italy. She lives in Tuscany (Lunigiana). Grants/Awards:
